ICT Lessons at HQ

The IcFEM Mission is setting up a Computer College at the IcFEM Headquarters in Kimilili. We are not just aiming at providing a service for the public, but we also want to teach invaluable ICT skills to Mission staff. We'll be offering a range of ICT lessons to the public. The basic computer course will cover word processing, email and use of the keyboard and mouse. Since the Cyber Centre has been up and running the Mission has realised that many people don't know how to sign onto an email server account and communicate with the wider world. One of the main reasons for the Cyber Centre, is so that the general public are able to keep in touch with friends and family and to know what is happening around the world. However, there are many people that cannot do this because of their lack of ICT Skills. So once they've learnt the basics then they can proceed to the next level where they'll be given the chance to learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and Power Point. This could make a big difference to their employment prospects as well as improve the way that those in work carry out their duties.

As well as teaching the general public there is a major need for Mission staff to know Microsoft Word and Excel, so the Computer College will provide lessons for those staff who need help on Microsoft Office. Lessons for both the general public and Mission staff are on a one to one basis or group work.

We are aiming at strengthening communications amongst the public around Kimilili and accelerating the speed of computer literacy in the Kimilili Division. We have realised that this is a great opportunity for you, the gap student to help in the programme. Whatever your own level of computer literacy, you can contribute to this work.

ICT Lessons at Schools

As well as having the ICT lessons at the Headquarters for the Mission staff and the general public we are going to incorporate classes with the local schools within the Kimilili Division. Once we have installed electricity at the Dreamland Education Centre, Information Communication Technology will be within the syllabus. This is a great opportunity for you to teach the youngsters your ICT skills which will allow the students to get a really good start before they go to High School. We will also be teaching High School students which gives the students the competitive edge once they have left school and are looking for a career, which can be very hard in Kenya. Our aim is to connect the schools and strengthen the partnership of schools and to help Kenya to have the ability to compete with the developed world. Wouldn't it be wonderful to link schools in Kimilili with others around the world?

Implementing Databases

The IcFEM Mission is a growing organisation which means that the amount of paperwork and information that is being produced weekly is becoming too much to store in filing cabinets. The paperwork which we have is very valuable to the Mission which means that we need more than one copy. So the Communications Department decided that the Mission needed to store all of the information on a database. We have started to produce databases for each department, but there is far too much work for the current Communications Department to handle. We need the help of gap year students to help to produce a database for each department. Manuals need to be produced and staff need to be properly trained in the use and maintenance of the database. The IcFEM Mission needs a gap year student who would be able to help us with this urgent task.

Designing Newsletters

At the moment the Mission only produces an annual newsletter. We are aiming to produce one monthly and need someone to help us with the layout and design of the newsletter. We need to set up systems to get information from departments on an ongoing basis and develop skills in writing and editing the newsletter. We have realised form other large organisations, and sometimes within our own organisation, that the staff sometimes do not know what is happening within other departments and what fellow staff have achieved. So the IcFEM Mission needs to produce a monthly newsletter for the whole of the Mission so that the staff are kept up to date with God's work through this Mission

The IcFEM Mission has started to produce presentations that are taken to conferences around the world and also sent to IcFEM Europe so that they can be used to keep current supporters and donors up to date with the Mission's work. The Mission needs someone to update the information on these presentations and to produce a monthly Prayer and Thanksgiving Sheet to be sent by email to the IcFEM Europe. We also need the annual report to be produced in a power point format.

All of the above is to keep the staff of IcFEM Mission, IcFEM Europe, donors and supporters up to date with the Mission's work which is very important to us in Kimilili.

Website Maintenance

IcFEM currently has two websites, one for the Mission and the second is mainly for the Gap Programme. However, we find it difficult to update the Mission website at the Headquarters in Kimilili as it’s produced in the UK. So what we need is for someone with website construction skills so that we can produce a website which we can update at this end. This will have a huge impact on our communication with the wider world and will allow us to keep donors and Mission supporters up to date. Our new website will have more information on each department, activities, visitors, projects and significant events in the life of the Mission. So if anybody who has web designing skills and knowledge, we need you!!

Cyber Cafe

At the Headquarters in Kimilili we opened up our Cyber Centre in late March 2005. Since then we have been receiving a lot of clients which has frequently led to a shortage of help and ICT Knowledge. Even if you only have a small amount of ICT Knowledge you could help the customers with logging onto their email account and sending and receiving emails. We want to be known for providing high quality care and advice for our clients and gap students would perform a very valuable role in this.

The nature of the climate is such that equipment needs to be cleaned and any dust particles 'blown out' from inside the processing units on a monthly basis. Without this level of maintenance the equipment will fail. We also need to install new software, provide updated virus protection and maintain the range of laptops used by staff.

In addition the staff produce presentations for the Mission, which can be very time consuming.

So what ever your level of knowledge from basic to advanced, as an operator or technician we can make full use of your skills. Even if you are considering working on other projects you may be able to spend some time supporting the important work of this department.
