Teaching

Teaching children is possible in the Dreamland Education Centre and at Khalayi Nursery School.  If you are wanting to work with children whilst you are here, we encourage you to spend time in the education department. It will benefit the children, who are always enthusiastic to learn and meet new people. The staff do an excellent job here and will be very encouraged by your interest and desire to help teach the children. The Mission regards education at the forefront of what they do and are always grateful for any support they can get in the short, medium or long term. Some staff have taken part in exchanges in England and would welcome your work here with them. Resources are in short supply and at the moment there is no electricity but that does not impact on the enthusiasm to teach and learn at these schools.

You'll be in an environment different to the one you're used to back at home, which means that your cultural awareness will broaden, you'll learn how the Kenyan Education system works and how different the students are here to the students in your home country. Once you have seen the differences and similarities of the education in Kenya you'll be given the opportunity to put your opinions and ideas across to the school which may give the heads of department a new outlook on teaching. When you get home you may think of other ways you can continue your support for the schools.

The subjects taught at Dreamland Education Centre which you could help with are:

      • English
      • Mathematics
      • Science
      • Christian Religious Education
      • Physical Education
      • Social Studies
      • Geography
      • History
      • Music
      • Arts and Crafts
      • Business Education
      • Drama

The last four subjects listed are the subjects that the Dreamland Education Centre need particular help with. You don't have to necessarily teach the whole class, you could be a teaching assistant working with individuals or small groups of students.

The children at Khalayi Nursery School overflow with enthusiasm. They love to learn English, their numbers and memory verses. To them everyone is a teacher from whom they can learn. Their play is simple, but full of life. We can guarantee you will miss these children when you return home.

Children matter in this community and the future of the community rests with their education. You could play a very valuable role in that education.

Holiday Clubs

There are many children in each village as God continues blessing this generation. The current curriculum in our Primary and Secondary schools has not allowed many children to have a chance to develop their leisure interests nor provided enough time for God's word. There are some Christian values that are in danger of being lost unless we step up the positive impact on them. The holiday club focuses on bringing change and promoting good values to our children.

Our aim is to raise healthy children both spiritually and physically who have a visionary mind. Our objectives for the holiday club are:

      • To promote unity and fellowship among children
      • To promote use of their gifts and talents
      • To expand their vision of themselves and their future
      • To develop greater openness among children
      • To learn biblical values which are needed for worship and ministry
      • To promote interaction with other children of different backgrounds

We have a range of activities which allows every child to enjoy their time with the IcFEM Mission and to develop their skills. They can take part in cookery, crafts, sports, information and technology classes, bible study, board games, puppet shows, Christian videos, first aid classes and trips.

We feel that gap year student can have a great impact on the Mission and the future of Western Province. Your talents invaluable to us and we could use these to minister to the children, develop and teach them skills and broaden their minds, horizons and vision. We also have learnt from previous gap year students that students form overseas bring with them new skills and ideas which can bless the Mission and the community. We will looking to you to plan, arrange funding and run the holiday clubs in consultation with the staff at IcFEM. This is an ideal opportunity for groups of students to get involved in.
